Long Beach"s fire program began in 1901 with the purchase of two hose carts, 1,000 feet of hose and 35 fire hydrants. By 1923 the city"s new Fire Station No. 1, pictured here, stood on the 400 block of Pacific Avenue and Third Street in downtown Long Beach. This station was later destroyed in the 1933 earthquake.
