In the 1966 gubernatorial primary, Sam Yorty challenged incumbent Democratic Governor Edmund G. (Pat) Brown. Yorty received 981,088 votes (37.6 percent) to Brown's 1,355,262 ballots (51.9 percent); Brown ultimately lost to opponent Ronald W. Reagan.
