Tra^`n, Le^? Xua^n was born in 1924, the daughter of South Vietnam's ambassador to the United States, Tran Va?n Chuong. She married Ngo^ Ði`nh Nhu, the brother and chief-advisor to President Ngo^ Ði`nh Die^?m, who became president in 1955. Die^?m was a bachelor and since Mme. Nhu and her family lived in Independence Palace, she was considered to be the first lady. She was known for her harsh and incendiary comments and she attacked, mocked and severely denounced the Buddhist community of South Vietnam and the strong American influence and presence in the country. Her attitude and extravagance made her unpopular in Vietnam. She was forced to live in exile in France after her husband and brother-in-law, Die^?m, were assassinated on November 2, 1963. She died in 2011. Pictured is Vietnamese first lady, Mme. Ngo Dinh Nhu, left, arriving in Los Angeles with her daughter, Le Thuy. Nhu will give a speech supporting her government's policies in Viet Nam at an affair in Beverly Hills sponsored by the World Affairs Council. Photograph dated October 26, 1963.
