Description
Photograph of a view of Spring Street and Main Street from a nearby hill, showing the Old Court House, Los Angeles, ca.1872. A two-story Romanesque building stands across the street at center, its clock tower rising from the center of its flat roof, reading roughly five minutes after four o'clock. In the foreground, the backs of non-residential buildings can be seen, a roofless brick wall with windows standing at center either undergoing construction or demolition. Debris, including a window frame, surround it. Small utility shacks stand behind. Towards the top of the image manufacturing buildings are situated across the street with trees and a few residential-style houses visible in the background. Legible signs include: "Boots and Shoes" and "Furniture and Bedding Manufactory". The Old Court House was known as the Temple Building, the first county court house in Los Angeles, built in 1859 by John Temple and rented to the County and to vendors who leased store space.
