Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes.
Dodger Stadium in the Los Angeles area of Chavez Ravine, just north of downtown, is currently the third oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. Construction began in 1959, it opened on April 10, 1962, and has been home to the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team ever since. It was designed by architect Emil Praeger and was built by the Vinell Construction Company. The stadium sits on 300 acres and has a capacity of 56,000, with 16,000 parking spaces. The stadium was privately financed by Walter O'Malley with an original proposed cost of $12 million but was finally completed at a cost of $23 million. Dodger Stadium's official address is 1000 Elysian Park Avenue.
Photograph article dated November 1, 1962 partially reads, "The course itself is almost circular with an elongated flair at the left end. The drivers will be confronted with seven turns and elevations ranging up to 100 feet. The cars will race east to west encountering a hill at turn No. 1 which actually is a modified 'S' shape, and then downhill out of turn No. 2 into a straightaway and into a sharp bend which winds uphill to turns No. 6 and 7 and back into the start-finish area. The course measures 1.6 miles." Photograph caption reads, "California Sports Car Club will sponsor races at Dodger Stadium."
