Description
Republican mural, Whiterock Road, Ballymurphy, 1999. Mural depicts the Famine which took place between 1845-9, in the year of the 150th anniversary. Figure of woman with child begging at bottom, to the left and right: children scavenging in the fields for potatoes with woman and child working the fields and harvesting the failed crop; middle image father and child; 'An Gorta Mór' (The Great Hunger/Famine); 'Britain's genocide by starvation'; 'Ireland's Holocaust 1845-1849'; 'Over 1,500,000 deaths'. Celtic embroidery; name of artist - Gerard Kelly - and date at bottom right.
