Description
Short handle hoe used for thinning lettuce. It was known as "El Cortito" by migrant workers. Lettuce was over-seeded in a row every inch or two apart because the planter mechanism could not reliably space tiny lettuce seeds and you did not know what would successfully germinate. Then, field workers would thin the seedlings to a hoe-width apart by slicing out unwanted plants. The short handle hoe is most accurate for this precision job but requires the worker to continually bend over. California banned this tool in 1975 following lobbying efforts by the United Farm Workers.
