Description
Photograph of the grave of Peter Lebec in a copse of gnarled trees at Fort Tejon, [s.d.]. A square of fence extends from a tree just to the left of center and supports a plaque that details his death. More dead and gnarled trees are visible to the right, while hills and a clearing can be seen to the left. A second, illegible plaque can be seen attached to the tree near the right.
The plaque reads "Peter Lebec. Shot a bear under this tree and supposing it was dead went up to it. It caught and killed him. His companions buried him undert his tree upon which they cut his epitaph 'I, Peter Lebec, was killed here August 12, 1837'. The bark with the epitaph was cut out and can be seen in library in Bakersfield".
