This image was part of a California State Library photographic history project documenting the daily lives and historical, political, and cultural contributions of California's diverse communities. On June 12, 1999, Long Beach residents donated to the Long Beach Public Library 398 family and personal photographs as part of this ongoing statewide project. Shown in this image are two little girls with short, dark, cropped hair playing dress up in women's cast off clothing. They are playing in an outdoor brick corner space suggesting a burned out house foundation. One girl is wearing a decorated cloche style hat and a coat with a fur collar. The donor's sister Alice is on the right, wearing a cape and carrying a handbag. They are shaking hands. Behind them is a high brick wall. At far right, a large cast iron pot sits on the bricks near them. The windows and side wall of an apartment house are also partly visible in the background. DATE NOTES: Circa 1920's. ORIG. IMAGE: 8" x 10" B&W glossy print. NEGATIVE: No. KEYWORDS: Families, fashion, ethnicities, Japanese.
