This image was originally part of a California State Library photographic history project documenting the daily lives and historical, political, and cultural contributions of California's diverse communities. On June 12, 1999, Long Beach residents donated to the Long Beach Public Library 398 family and personal photographs as part of this ongoing statewide project. Shown in this image is the exterior storefront of the William Schilling grocery store, located south of Broadway, on Pine Avenue. The establishment has two large front windows with goods including hats and fans, and signs hang above the front boardwalk, stating: "Wm. Schilling & Co.; Groceries." A small dog stands at left next to Mr. Stillwell. A group of people, including a small barefoot boy, stand in the store's shadowed doorway behind the five men. From left to right, the men are: C.A. Stillwell, William Schilling, Jr., William Schilling, Al Austin, and Mr. McMinn. A vertical painted sign behind Mr. Stillwell says, "Boots & Shoes and another one behind the entry door says "Wm Schilling Dry Goods." The sign visible just above the dog advertises "Frazer Axle Grease." DATE NOTES: Circa 1915 noted on image back. ORIG. IMAGE: 7" x 9" B&W glossy print.
