Close-up view of the statue of crystalline limestone of a seated Buddha in virāsana and displaying the dhyāna mudrā. The eyes are half-closed. It is considered one of the best preserved sculpted Buddha statues found in Sri Lanka. Some similarities with Mathura (India) standing Buddha images of the Gupta period include a diaphanous robe and the three ring-like folds of skin around the neck. The face, however, is here ovoid not egg-shaped as in the Mathura image. "The half-closed eyes and calm quietude indicate a relaxed composure of the mind befitting a yogic attitude of the great Being." It is considered to be one of the greatest among Sri Lankan Buddha statues. It would have been the main image in a large shrine room of the monastery. Height: 1.760 meters.
