Description
Side view of the Carnegie Library on the located south side of East San Fernando Street. The stairs on the left led to the main entrance and into a lobby covered by a copper dome. The wing facing the viewer is one of two reading rooms on either side of the lobby. A lawnmower sits on the lawn next to the building." In 1901, Andrew Carnegie gave the city of San Jose $50,000 to erect a public library. The library opened in 1903 on land next to the San Jose State Normal School campus. The public library was here until 1937 when it moved to the old post office building on Market Street. The Carnegie Library was used as the San Jose State Student Union until it was demolished in 1960.
