In 1901, Andrew Carnegie gave the city of San Jose $50,000 to erect a public library. The library opened in 1903 on land next to the San Jose State Normal School campus. The public library was here until 1937 when it moved to the old post office building on Market Street. The Carnegie Library was used as the San Jose State Student Union until it was demolished in 1960.
