Description
New Hospital, Mihecani, Lomweland" ❧ Photograph showing a large building, corner on, constructed from brick and with corrugate iron roofs. There is a walled area at the front of the building and a staircase leading up towards the main door. The building appears to have three main blocks joined together. ❧ Lomweland was part of Portuguese East Africa [Mozambique] and the first Church of Scotland mission was established in Mihecani [1913] south east of the Numali hills near Alto Moloque. This was where Lewis Mataka Bandawe translated the New Testement into Lomwe and John Gray Kufa worked in the hospital. Both men were to become active in Malawian nationalism and politics. Some critics blame their Blantyre educations for radicalising them. Kufa was second in command during the Chilembwe uprising [1915] against colonial rule and was executed after it failed. ❧ This image belongs to an album of photographs collected by Dr. Stevenson and includes images from India, China and Africa.
