““Fakirs resting on the roadside. Views at Chinsurah [Hugli-Chuchura].” View of four men seated on the ground. Fakirs originally referred to Sufi Muslim ascetics or mystics who lived off alms. Eventually the term came to refer to mystics or ascetics of any religion or beggars more generally. ❧ Views of Rajputana by Lala Deen Diyal.
