Letter of Tomkins, 1952, Aug. 25: "We went down the river from Moab to near the mouth of the Green (1938, Sep. 29-Oct. 02) in tandum [sic] boats lashed together, the rear one rigged with an old Ford motor belonging to two boys hauling for an oil drilling outfit.
