Tinted lantern slide showing a street in Peking (Beijing). Pedestrians walk in the street - one man pulls a barrow whilst three blind men walk with canes. Two traditional arches can be seen, along with the walls of hutongs (traditional Chinese narrow streets with courtyard housing). Modernity is represented in tram lines and cables, electricity power lines and motor cars. The slide was developed by the Photo Department, Tientsin Hui Wen Academy, Tientsin, China. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914.
