Description
The series "Praise for Multicolored Blossoms" depicts the inhabitants of the Shin Yoshiwara, the government-licensed pleasure quarters. The prints are portraits of courtesans of the district, with their names and workplaces written on the fan in the upper panel. In "The Secret" two women whisper under a flowering tree; one has a note tucked in the sleeve of her kimono, whose pattern matches that of the flowering tree above her. The women wear high platformed sandals, suitable for outdoors, as they walk across the stepping stones of the garden. (Bruce Coats, Chikanobu: Modernity and Nostalgia in Japanese Prints, p. 34.)
