Mary (Lewis) Myers and her husband, Lemuel A. Myers, came to Whittier in 1906. That same year Mr. Myers and his brother, Wilbert S. Myers, opened Myers Department Store. Adah R. (Denney) Slayton came to Whittier as a young woman in 1912 and took a position with the Whittier Savings Bank. She married Percy Slayton in 1919, he then took the position at the bank that she was leaving. He retired from Bank of America after 33 years. Ethel (Weeks) Williams married Harry Williams, whose family owned the newspaper the Register. The paper was bought out by the Whittier News in 1906 but he went on to become a popular sportswriter.
