Description
Photographic portrait of Una Fleming modeling a shawl once owned by Lola Montez, [s.d.]. Ms. Fleming is standing with her back to the viewer at center and is looking over her right shoulder. The shawl reaches from her shoulders to the ground and has a floral pattern. A row of dark fringe goes around the edge of the cloth. Fleming has dark hair and is wearing a fan-shaped headpiece. Photoprint reads: "The Spanish Shawl of Lola Montez: Miss Una Fleming of Los Angeles displays the famous shawl owned by Lola Montez and which is said to be fully one-hundred years old. The shawl, embroidered with white needle work on a burgundy red background in what is known as the Manton pattern, weighs over five pounds. According to the owner, Mr. L.L. Burns of the First National Studios, the shawl is reputedly the gift to Lola from Ludwig of Bavaria and was brought to San Francisco when the colorful adventuress arrived there in 1850. Subsequently the shawl was presented to a friend in San Francisco and it was still in the possession of that family when it was purchased by a Pasadena lady a few years ago. Hearing of its history, Mr. Burns purchased the shawl for a collection of his own which numbers several historic costumes worn by early Californians, Mr. Burns subsequently established its authenticity through careful research and it has been definitely ascertained that the shawl was worn and in the possession of the notorious Lola for many years prior to her coming to America."
