Description
California Middle School is located at 1600 Vallejo Way in Sacramento, California. Designed by Sacramento architecture luminary Harry Devine and built at a cost of $300,000, the structure opened in November 1933 with an enrollment of 738 pupils and a faculty of 30. Its construction was funded by way of a $1,146,000 bond measure and New Deal legislation that would produce two other junior highs in Stanford and Kit Carson, a significant accomplishment during a depressed economy. In 1935, the relatively newborn “Cal” then went on to sweep the annual track and field meet for junior highs that was held at nearby Sacramento Stadium. The original Mission-style building was demolished in September of 1975, due to not meeting earthquake safety standards. At roughly the same time, the school’s title and role changed with a conversion from California Junior High School to California Middle School.
