Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Australian woman speaking to camera about a book. Script reads, "As a citizen of Australia, Lisa Hobbs, veteran San Francisco columnist, is permitted to visit communist China. She gained entry there by convincing them she was a well-meaning housewife. The author of 'I Saw Red China' was the speaker at Theta Sigma Phi Women's Journalism Society in Palo Alto. Channel 11 news asked Mrs. Hobbs what comments she has received from Peking on her book..." Segment 2 (silent): Crowds watching a surfing competition. Script reads, "The hottest (or coldest) national pastime of many a year reached new heights this weekend during the first annual Steamer Lanes Surfing Championships at Santa Cruz. Hundreds of surfers entered and thousands watched the two-day competition in balmy summer-like weather at Steamer Lanes ad Cowell's Beach, Northern California's answer to Hawaii's famous Makaha Beach. Today's action was so swift even local dogs watched enthusiastically. A high point in the competition was the mixed tandem event. Gilroy dentist Dr. R. Scott and Janet Fujimori placed 3rd. Spectacular balance and teamwork overcame the tricky six to 10 foot surf at Cowell's. A highly interested gallery lined the steep cliffs over a quarter-mile distance. Spectators rewarded outstanding performances with loud applause." Segment 3 (Sound): Convertible car maneuvering around cones at high speed in a parking lot; man pushing race car across lot; woman arriving in convertible car with head scarf wrapped around her hair. Appears to be preparations for a race, or an automobile show, possibly at a speedway. No script references apart from front page of script, listing "Sil Film...Sports Cars" as one of the news topics. Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent): Members of the National Guard being inspected inside a hanger or auditorium. Script reads, "Armory. Three local brigades of the 49th California National Guard Division met inspection by their commending general this morning at Hedding Street Armory. Major General Paul Teilh personally checked each of the more than 150 men during the once-a-year ceremony. Purpose behind the inspection is said to be to allow General Teilh to become aware of his men's fitness first-hand. The 49th Division draws from the area of California between Visalia and Red Bluff. It is one of several guard units recently designated 'Selective Reserve Forces.' The men attend extra training sessions and receive large amounts of new equipment. Their level of combat status is maintained at what the National Guard terms 'maximum readiness.' Called 'week-end warriors,' all have regular civilian jobs during the week...including General Teilh. He is the Santa Clara County Clerk." Segment 2 (silent + sound): Small sailboat coming ashore on a rocky shore; ceremony involving drummers and a flag; small group carrying flag up a hill and planting it on top of the hill. Flag reads, "ap." Man interviewed about purpose of ceremony. According to script, "A small portion of the beach at Monterey has long been the subject of some wrangling between the City of Monterey and the federal government as to who actually owns it. This weekend a third party decided to stake a claim on the property and held an official ceremony to proclaim the fact. Members of a local society going under the highly auspicious name of the 'Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones Society' stormed ashore from a couple of rather overloaded dinghies, to be greeted by fellow society members. Then with a roll of drums the official 'ap' flag was hoisted and proclamations read to inform all and sundry of the society's claim to the territory. A miniature cannon was also on hand to fire a 21-gun salute for the occasion, but, at last count, had only managed to fire 7 rounds and 10 misfires! The society was formed a year ago in honor of Commodore T. ap Catesby Jones, who, according to the society's historian, first planted the U.S. flag in Monterey in 1842 and claimed it as U.S. territory from the Mexican government. This despite the fact that the history books credit Commodore John Sloat with the honor. Apparently Jones did it all by mistake but the whole issue becomes to complicated that Channel 11 asked the Society's Commodore Bertram Rudolph, a man in a cocked hat, to try to explain the situation."
