Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Sprinter Tommie Smith on track, winning race. (See also Segment 3). Script reads, "San Jose State's great sprinter, Tommie Smith was again the man of the hour at the Spartan track...the 6' 5" speedster completely shattered the world record marks in the 220 and the 200 meter dash as he became the first man in history to break 20 seconds at both distances...Smith was timed in 19.5, for both the 220 and the 200 meters, as he all but flew across the finish line...Dave Sime and Frank Budd held the 220 mark, while Smith, Budd and Sime were tied for the record in the 200 meters. For Tommie Smith, it was a great afternoon, as he won the 100 yard dash in 9.3...the wind was over the allowable limit in the 100, but was under the mark in the 220...Smith also anchored the winning 440 relay team...in fact he was clocked unofficially in 9.2, for his 110 yard leg in that race. This afternoon's 220 was run on a straightaway, and will be submitted for a world record." Segment 2 (silent + sound): Catholic priests and nuns milling around a fair, standing at tables. Followed by interview with priest in which he says that he doesn't put any limits on what God can achieve and he welcomes any moves towards greater unity among Christian churches. Script reads, "His Excellency Joseph McGucken, Archbishop of the San Francisco Catholic Archdiocese visited Campbell today. He attended what is termed a 'religious vocation fair' at St. Lucy's Church. The Archbishop walked among the hundreds of visitors to the fair, greeting them and posing for pictures. Priests brothers and sisters from 25 religious communities in the Bay Area gathered for the fair, designed to aid young persons seeking guidance in the choice of religious careers. Reflecting on a recent announcement of a planned merger of four major Protestant faiths, our reporter asked the archbishop to forecast the possibilities of a future 'Single Christian faith.'" Segment 3 (silent): Sprinter Tommie Smith on the track, winning multiple races. Close-up of a stopwatch. (See Segment 1 for story details). Segment 4 (silent): Sports car racing action at Laguna Seca racetrack. Story reads, "Jim Williams of Palo Alto, driving a Huffaker Special, took the lead at the start and won an easy victory today in the classes C, D, E, F, and G modified event of regional races sponsored by the Amateur Sports Car Club of America. The 20,000 dollar U.S. Road Racing Championship will be held at the Laguna Seca track near Monterey tomorrow. Williams' Chevrolet-powered Huffaker turned in a fastest lap of one-minute-20-point-five seconds over the one and nine-tenths mile course. The race lasted 45 minutes." Segment 5 (silent): Tennis match. Script reads, "The San Jose State Spartans won the West Coast Athletic Conference Tennis Championships this afternoon on the Spartan courts. State swept both the singles and doubles championships...with Raul Contreras defeating teammate Bob Murio 6-2, 6-1 for the Singles title. Contreras and Rodney Kob knocked off Gene Waters and Mike Amador of Pepperdine 6-3, 6-4 for the doubles championship. In team competition, the Spartans scored 20 points, while Pepperdine followed with 12, Santa Barbara had 6, St. Mary's, Santa Clara, and USF 2 apiece, and the University of Pacific 1. Raul Contreras' double victory today followed in the footsteps of Spartan Rich Anderson, who won the WCAC singles and doubles championships in 1964 and 65." Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent + sound): Marines marching in parade down First Street in San Jose. The Bank of Italy/Bank of America building is in the background, also signs for Kress, Montgomery Hotel. Brief sound clip of marching band. Story reads, "Today was Marine Corps Reserve Civic Action Day, and the leathernecks started off in grand style with a weapons-studded parade in downtown San Jose. Hundreds of men in full battle as well as dress uniform marched down South First Street. The Marine Reservists also displayed some of their newest equipment, including this Hawk Anti-aircraft Missile System and a portable field radar intercept unit. Local high school marching bands were also on hand, including this one from Del Mar High. Civic Action Day is in support of 'CARE,' a program designed to aid the people of South Vietnam. The parade was sponsored by local Marine Reserve batteries." Segment 2 (silent): Presentation to small crowd inside an auditorium, including architectural drawing of a building, and a map. Story reads, "San Jose State College President Dr. Robert Clark was keynote speaker at today's Alumni Association Academic Conference on the Spartan campus. The conference -- featuring a 'Toward Tomorrow' theme, is designed to acquaint alumni and the public with the college. The event was planned as part of the annual Spring Alumni Week. Dr. Clark took advantage of the opportunity to explain to the group some of the strides San Jose State is making in growing to what he termed a frugal but not cheaply beautified campus. Attendance at the conference was sparse. Alumni Association Director Richard Buxton told Channel 11 news this is the first year the conference has been scheduled and in future years the idea should catch on. Following Dr. Clark's talk, separate groups were designated to discuss various phases of college instruction, including business, tutorial instruction and art." 5/7/66 A-D 463 100' SIL MAID OF CALIF; 5/7/66 E-F 463 100' SIL CIA PICKETS/LAGUNA SECA 100' SF
