The Pacoima church follows the teachings of Shinran Shonin, or Shin Buddhism, which teaches that the ordinary man can lead a Buddhist life without shutting himself in a monastery. ... A Buddhist father lifts his son to pour sweet tea over the Baby Buddha during a celebration of Buddha's birthday this month. Ritual symbolizes the rain of sweet tea at time of Gautama's birth in 556 B.C."; Valley Buddhist Temple (now San Fernando Valley Hongwanji Buddhist Temple) is located at 9450 Remick Avenue in Pacoima. The temple was built in 1961 with dedication ceremonies held on November 11, 1962. As the congregation grew, the temple became inadequate and a new Hondo was constructed in 1988 and dedicated in 1992. The first Temple is still used as a social hall.
