Description
1989-1143. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. A, leaf 18. Large 4 storey building seen from the corner; short side to the left and long side on the right; 1st floor has busineses with a covered awning; on corner is a bank, identified on the window; 2nd floor has 19 tall rectangular windows on long side & 5 on short side, each surmounted by a round-arched pediment; 2nd and 3rd floors have balconies; 3rd floor windows are surmounted by triangular pediments and 4th floor windows have lintels supported by corbels; flat roof line with corbels beneath. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "'Old Dawson House,' erected by G. V. Dawson in 1856. Owned by The Odd Fellows Association in 1862. the upper stories were used for years as the lodge rooms of the organization until their new building was erected at the corner of 9th Kay street in 1871...The Peoples Bank occupied the (portion) lower floor from 1879 until 1911... The building is still called 'St. George Rooms', the name it has held since the early 60's..."
