Description
In the fall of 1902, Charles E. Wright of the Wright and Kimbrough Company, contacted Cecile Phelan, seeking to purchase her family’s Oak Hill Ranch. This 142-acre property had been established by her then-dying husband Gregory, sometime prior to 1865. Phelan’s response was that they would prefer to keep the land whole and, in any case, were obliged to respect the lease held by their long-time tenants, the Gabriellis. Any purchaser would also have to contend with a murky title chain as well as a contested border with a neighbor who Phelan warned was “not very tame.” The purchase eventually went through, eventually growing into East Sacramento's "Fabulous Forties" neighborhood.
