Carleton thanks Riley for a copy of "The Puddleforn Papers." He then discusses the various editions through which the work has gone, and tells Riley that he wishes he would write more. Carleton closes the letter with the announcement that he is worling on a new book of his own and plans to send Riley a copy. The letter is written in ink on an off-white piece of transparent paper. There is a letterhead that reads, "James R. Bartholomew, Dealer in Fish and Provisions, 196 Greenwich Street."
