65 pages The front end of the sketchbook has sketches by Raborg and when you flip it over the back of the book has sketches by Cooper. Page 1 - signed by Raborg Sketch of a ship with sails on a body of water. On the upper left, there is a small cartoonish sketch of a Native American with a feather in his hair. Fairly rough sketch done in crisscrossing lines. Page 2 Possible landscape scene, shading but no detail. Page 3 - signed by Raborg Very nice quick sketches of a man's face. He is older with a beard and mustache and is wearing a coat. Two sketches - in the top sketch he is looking to the left and in the bottom sketch he is looking down. Page 4 "Honey Moon" - Landscape scene with the profile of a woman formed into a cliff. She is looking out to the sea. Mostly lines and shading but no detail. Some writing at the bottom "In shore just a few days I fear - Even the rocks resembled my dear. " Page 5 another landscape scene with shading and lines but no detail. Page 6 Some small cartoonish sketches of figures done in pen. Page 7 landscape scene composed of scribbles. next page - blank Page 8 "My Heart" - Small line drawing of a heart with a woman's figure drawn in the middle and an arrow pierced through it. Some poetry, "My heart is pierced on to an arrow of gold and I find the heirese (?) very cold." Page 9 "Honey Moon" - Small shaded drawing at the top of the page. A couple standing on a beach or hill looking out at a heart shaped moon. Page 10 "Garden of Noses" - Line drawing of three flowers with faces in the center. The faces have very large noses. No shading or background detail. Page 11- Two small sketches "All is vanity" - a skull wearing a crown sitting on a heap of fabric (?). There is a knife and some jewelry sitting next to the skull. "Cast aside" - a group of objects sitting on a surface: a cup, a pipe, some paper or letters, some clothing (gloves or socks?) and maybe a newspaper. next page - blank Page 12 - two sketches "The Lookout" - Landscape with three Native American men sitting in a circle around a fire. On a cliff above them to the left is another Native American man on horseback looking out over the valley. "Where ignorance is bliss tis folly to be wise." - A chicken or rooster perched on the handle of an axe that is stuck into a piece of wood. Some shading, no background detail Page 13 "Try this on your piano" - A quick sketch of an axe set into a square picture frame. next page - blank Page 14 - signed by Raborg "Ignorance is bliss" - A chicken or rooster perched on the handle of an axe that is stuck into a piece of wood (same as Pg.14). This drawing is larger (takes up the whole page) and is nicely shaded with more detail. The axe is stuck into the stump of a tree. Page 15- signed by Cooper and dated May 12, 1912 (*note* this almost a month after the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912) "Tomb of the Titanic" - Contour line drawing of a figure with wings standing with her arms straight out at her side. The outline of the figure is jagged as if it was carved from an iceberg. There is possibly an iceberg in the distance and one to the right of the figure. Very interesting concept, not much detail. Page 16 "The Northland" - Line drawing of a man wearing a cape and a hat with wings. He has one arm wrapped around his waist and the other raised up to the sky. He is standing on what looks like an island but might be a grassy hill. The sun is behind him and at his feet is a miniture bear or buffalo. Some shading, but the draiwng is somewhat messy. Page 17 "What's the choke" - Interestig gestural drawing of three cartoonish men standing around laughing with each other. Not much shading, no background detail. next page - blank Page 18 "Morning" A rough sketch of a cannon and a gun on a hillside. There are some birds in the sky above the cannon. Not much detail. Page 19 "A speaking likeness" - The bust of a man with his mouth open (looks like he's laughing), he is wearing a large hat and leaning his head to the left. Gestural drawing in pencil with a blue ink wash over the face and hat. next page -blank Page 20 "Do you like Bananas" - Gestural line drawing of three figures, no shading or detail. The figure on the left is pushing or proping up a much larger figure of a man with a top hat who is sliping on a banana peel and sliding toward the third figure on the right. Page 21 "Yellow fever" - quick sketch of a crowd of people "worshiping" the sun, which is depicted with a dollar sign in the middle. next page -blank Page 22 "I won't hurt you all" - a cutesy cartoonish drawing of a chubby beast holdig a little winged baby in earch arm. The babies are smiling at the moster and the beast is eyeing them with with a creepy grin and obvious delight. Beside him to the right is a pot with steam billowing out of it. Mostly composed of thick lines, not much shading. Page 23 "Cupids in Africa" - Line drawing of two winged babies sitting in some foilage about to be attacked by a lion coming in from the left. Page 24 "Cupids and Psyche" - Line drawing of two crawling winged babies who look frightened by a monster reaching out for them from the left. next several pages are blank Page 25 Basic line drawing of some lines and objects, not sure what any of the objects are or what the drawing depicts. Page 26 Basic gesture drawing of some figures - two at a table (?) and two hoovering above the table. next page blank Page 27 "He take life easy" - very rough sketch of a man with a knife in his mouth wearing a large hat. He is holding a sword or gun in his right hand and pointing it at a smaller figure. This figure is handing the man a sheet of paper with the word life printed on it. next page blank Page 28 signed L. Louis (?) "The Home Plate" - Rough line drawing of a man sitting at a table wth a vey large plate in front of him. There are two large flies approaching him, the man does't seem to be aware of this. On the wall behind him is a plaque that reads "God Bless Our Home." next page blank Page 29 Cutesy drawing of two chubby cupids, one girl one boy, holding hands inside of a heart. Above them "love" is written. Page 30 Rough drawing of a toolbox (?) or a basket with objects inside. Some shading, not too interesting. Page 31 Basic line drawing of a gun case (?) and a barrel several pages blank Page 32 signed by L.G. West (?) A few small, rough sketches of some figures and a sailing boat. Page 69 - blank Small drawings of four objects and two figures - a skull, book, pair of dice, a cup with the words "Freedom Whiskey" written on it and the head of a Native American and an Egyptian (?) figure with a large headress. Some shading. Page 33 - Very messy sketch scribbled over. I think there are two cherubs flying, possibly beastly figure on the right and some palm trees on the left. next page - blank Page 34 A nicely shaded landscape scene set into a rectangular picture frame - very Cooper-like. next page - blank Page 35 Vast landscape scene, night sky or setting sun and some three trails of smoke in the distance. Shaded well, not much detail. next page - blank Page 36 Two landscape scenes -one horizontal one vertical. The horizontal scene depicts a river and some trees and shrubbery on the shore. The vertical scene possibly depicts a small boat on a body of water, there are dark clouds and a setting sun (?). next page - blank Page 37 Nice drawing, composed by scribbles and shading, depicting a road lined with trees and grasses. Some words written on drawing notating which colors should be used if painted. next page - blank Page 38 Landscape scene with some teepees off near the horizon. The sky is couldy and there are some birds flying around. Nicely shaded. next page - blank Page 39 Page divided into four sections with different sketches in each one: top left - landscape with three teepees and two figures top right - landscape with body of water and a sailboat or two bottom left - landscape with trees and grass bottom right - landscape with a swampy body of water, a canoe, and a setting sun. next page - blank Page 40 "Venice at night" - Shaded drawing of a body of water with a city scape at the horizon and a cloudy night sky. several pages - blank Page 41 Divided into three sections: top left - a forest scene bottom left - Landscape of a flat plain with four teepees right - Nicely shaded drawing of a Gondola in a canal running through a street (in Venice?) There is a doorway and fence on the right. Very nice composition and depiction of space. next page - blank Page 42- two drawings "Manfred and two fairies of the Alps" A woman lounging atop a hill and a man reaching out to her, there is one more figure on the right. "Singfuid and thy Rhine Maidens" A nude woman standing, looking to the left and gesturing with her left arm. There is another figure lounging on the ground with her back to the viewer and the figure of a man sitting behind and looking up at the first standing figure. Some shading, fairly messy. Page 43 -two sketches right - the figure of a man walking with a backpack and carrying something in his arms. left - two drakly shaded oxen, no background detail. Page 44 Drawing of a line of Native Americans walking on a trail off into the horizon. The drawing is set into a small picture frame at the center of the page. Some shading, but the drawing is small and not very detailed. next page - blank Page 45 Lightly skeched drawing of a body of water and some buildings or trees off on the shore. There are some boats or canoes on the water. Also, there are some numbers written onto the drawing, an additon problem that doesn't belong. next page - blank Page 46 Landscape scene with a house on a hill and a drak sky. Some shading. next page - blank Page 47 "Venice" - Drawing, set into a vertical picture frame, of a body of water and "Venice" in the distance. There are some boats on the water and a cloudy sky. next page - blank Page 48 Landscape scene set into a small picture frame in the center of the page. There ar some dark figures at the bottom of the page dancing around the picture frame next page - blank Page 49 Native American man standing on the shore of a river around some trees and foilage, he is holding a bow and arrow. Somewhat messy, composed of scribbles and shading. next page- blank Page 50 landscape scene of a marsh ad some trees. Small drawing set into a picture frame in the center of the page. Page 51 another small landscape set into a central picture frame - depicting trees and a creek or river. Page 52 two landscape drawings of hills, trees, and grass. Page 53 - signed and dated by Cooper on July 12, 1911 A bison fighting a pack of wolves. Nicely drawn but it has smudged and rubbed off onto the other page.
