Caption: "A Calendar leaf from a Book of Hours in Latin on vellum. Gothic textura quadrata script and musical notation in black ink with rubrics and 4-line staves in red. Each versal and response beings with a 4-line initial embellished with delicate tracery works and whimsical caricatures. The Antiphonary (or Antiphonal) is a book containing all portions of the Divine Office which were sung antiphonally by choir. In most cases, these books were quite large, so as to be seen by the entire choir. This particular example, however, was meant to be used by an individual during a procession, which would preclude a book of great size."
