Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Schaefer Air Service was the first FAA-certified air ambulance service in the United States. Part of the Schaefer Ambulance Service, it was founded by J. Walter Schaefer in 1947, in Los Angeles. Photograph caption dated March 27, 1956 reads "Into Valley skies. Schaefer flying ambulance is blur against Valley sky as it leaves Van Nuys Airport. Its destination may be Alaska, New York, Iowa. More than 1,275,000 miles have been flown since inauguration in 1949."; See images #00144378 through #00144381 for all photos in this series.
