At the reading center in Van Nuys Junior High School, 13-year-old Frances Cacioppo, uses a 'Shadowscope,' a machine that casts light on a book to help students read at a steady pace. The reading center, one of only two in the Valley, is a pilot program that provides specially equipped classrooms, staffed with trained reading teachers to help students with reading deficiencies and also provides advanced reading programs for gifted children.
