Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 Freddie Blassie, L.A.'s most enduring heel, up to his usual tricks: pulling his opponent's hair while choking him. Here, "Classy" Blassie defeats Lou Thesz during their World Wrestling Alliance title fight at the Sports Arena. Blassie dubbed his detractors "pencil neck geeks" (and recorded a song by that name), and co-starred in what became a cult film, "My Breakfast with Blassie," with comedian Andy Kaufman. He died in 2003. Photo dated: July 22, 1961.
