Title supplied by cataloger. At 220 feet below sea level, the Salton Sea is an inland saline lake that covers a surface area of approximately 376 square miles. In the early 1800s, Salton Sea was mainly a salt mining location, in the 1920s it became somewhat of a tourist attraction due to its water recreation and the waterfowl that were attracted to this area. Aerial view of the Salton Sea west shore; view is looking northeast. The area looks completely barren with a road, either Highway 111 or Highway 86, zigzagging up the middle. An outlined rectangular area appears close to the shoreline at upper center and what appears to be plotted land is visible at top. Photograph dated January 28, 1958.
