Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Southern Pacific River Station on San Fernando Road, ca.1919. The single-story brick building is at right. A row of tall, narrow archways goes around the front of the building. A concrete sidewalk can be seen in front of the building, and a row of utility poles runs along the sidewalk. Several automobiles can be seen parked near the curb at left. A wooden bridge can be seen over the road in the background at left. The station was Los Angeles's first Southern Pacific station and was built in 1887.
Legible signs include, from left to right: "Lunch Ro[om]", "Southern Pacific Ticket Office Waiting Room", and "To San Francisco River Station Elevation 29 Feet To New Orleans" Additional information: The Southern Pacific River Station was located at 1501 San Fernando Street. San Fernando Street was renamed North Spring Street sometime in the 1910s, and the new address for the River Station was 1500 North Spring Street. The 1917 city directory still lists River Station on San Fernando Street, while the 1918 edition lists it at the N Spring Street address.
