Pictured here is Allen's Dollar Store, located at 232 Pine Avenue. The building is constructed of large bricks. Large glass display windows wrap around the two main entrances under a sweeping arch. An elaborate art nouveau style floral bas-relief frieze decorates the upper sweep of the arch, and travels down each side. Above the frieze are two other layers, one showing bas-relief medallions spaced at intervals across the front. A bas relief molding finishes the upper edge. Incorporated into the tilework along the base of the largest central display windows are the words, "ALLENS DOLLAR STORE." The display windows show a variety of apparel, including underwear, socks, stockings, and dress shirts. A small sign posted in a window space in the center of the building reads, "This Building Erected by J. D. Scherer and Son, General Contractors." DATE NOTES: Noted on image back. ORIG. IMAGE: 8" x 10" B&W glossy print. NEGATIVE: Yes. KEYWORDS: Design.
