Description
This 1980 photo shows a large sculptural fountain in the center of the intersection of 11th and K streets. In an effort to prevent the migration of retail outlets to suburban shopping centers, Sacramento turned K Street into a pedestrian mall in 1969. Having failed, the city removed all fountains, paving and concrete structures, starting in April 1984, at a cost of $400,000. Also removed or replaced were between 95 and 100 trees. Just behind the fountain is Ransohoff's, a department store at 1031 K St.
