Description
Using archival records, Gonzales-Day went searching for California's historic hang trees. While some of the locations of the trees in this series are certain, others were taken in approximate locations that corresponded to the historical data available. For more information, see Lynching in the West: 1850-1935 (Duke, 2006). This tree was well documented, and many historians claim that when a man was hanged from this tree, a branch was cut off. Belleville is located in Holcomb Valley and is about eight miles from Big Bear Lake City in the San Bernardino Mountains.
