Inauguration Ceremony for Janice Hahn, the new city councilwoman for the 15th district, which encompasses San Pedro, held at the Korean Bell. Janice Hahn was elected in 2001 and reelected in 2005, running unopposed. She was elected to her posts not only because of her extended business background, but also for her community activism. Politics run in the Hahn family; Janice is the daughter of former county supervisor Kenneth Hahn, sister of former mayor James Hahn (seen standing behind her in this photo), and niece of former city councilman Gordon Hahn. Here we see the beginnings of her irrepressible public style that has endeared her to the San Pedro community, the community in which she resides. The Korean Bell was donated in 1976 to the people of Los Angeles by the people of the Republic of Korea. The friendship bell, as it is also called, is located in the Angel's Gate Recreational Center, and signifies the gratitude of the Korean people for the sacrifice of the American units with the UN forces during their civil war. It weighs 17 tons, has a height of 12 feet, and a diameter of 7 1/2 feet. It is made of copper and tin, with gold, nickel, lead and phosphorous added for tone quality. The bell is rung only three times each year: Fourth of July, Korean Independence Day (August 15th), and New Year's Eve. Photograph dated July 2001.
