Description
In 1974, York became "priest in charge"--basically, long term interim pastor-- at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Oakland, replacing Fr. Earl Neil. the Black Panther's chaplain, Neil became adviser to the presiding Bishop at the national headquarters in New York. The congregation had long been active in civil rights and the community. The church was the first location for the Black Panther's free breakfast program for school children and served as a meeting place for the organization as well. York was tasked with merging a nearby church, Trinity, with St. Augustine's. He remained there until he resigned in 1981. Later he went to work in mental health for Alameda County. He died in December 26, 1994.
