Description
The archaeological excavations at Mission San Luis Rey were undertaken by Father Geoffrey a professor of philosophy and his students. Father Geoffrey became fascinated by a gargoyle on the Mission grounds and after some research discovered that there had originally been another like it on the property. He and his students went looking for the gargoyle and found an entire complex. The lavanderia, or laundry area, was used by the Indians neophytes at the mission and were buried by ruble and brush after the mission was abandoned. The ruins uncovered included tile pools for washing clothing a bathing and piping to bring water the area including a primitive water purification system.
