Description
Melons are being packed into wooden crates prior to their being shipped to markets in various cities. There is an assembly line set up to facilitate the packing process. On the left side of the room are stacks of supplies. The people just in front of those stacks are assembling the wooden crates that are put onto a moving conveyer line. The three men to the right are placing melons into the crates moving on the line behind them. The two women in the center are putting fibrous material around the melons to cushion them during shipping. The crates in the front have had the top slates inserted and are ready to be shipped. The time period of this photograph is approximately 1945. The melon growing "boom" in Turlock had passed by the 1930's but melons were still hauled from elsewhere to be packed in Turlock. One of the women in the center has been identified as Carolyn Persson (Osterholm).
