Description
A school house in San Rafael, California. The brochure in which this image appears notes the school house "is a neat and convenient building, containing four rooms, with all the modern improvements, including a good bell, and furnishes [sic] accommodations for about two hundred children." The school house pictured is likely the B Street School once located on the southwest corner of B Street and Fifth Avenue. This illustration is from a brochure titled San Rafael Illustrated and Described, published by W.W. Elliott & Co., in 1884. The brochure shows images of early San Rafael and was designed as a promotional piece, meant to attract new residents and investors to Marin County's most populous town. The original lithographs were made from the sketches of Mr. Chris Jorgensen, a teacher at the San Francisco Art School and noted artist.
