The giant waterwheels, called “nouriahs” lift the river water onto aquaeducts from where the water runs to the gardens. The huge wheels run on a wooden axle that rests in a wooden bearing. Water being the only lubrication, the axle creaks in the bearing. This noise (of about thirty-four nouriahs) can be heard all over the town of Hama
