The Society of California Pioneers S.A. Pollard was born in Richmond, Va, January 9, 1824. Pollard was working as a clerk in New Orleans when news reached him of the discovery of gold in California. He soon organized a company and sailed from New Orleans to Tampico- in the latter part of December 1848. After a stop in Mexico, Pollard arrived in San Francisco February of 1849. He secured a position as Bookkeeper with the company, Sherman and Ruckel, in San Francisco. He also went into the mines at Woods Diggings near Jamestown. He later opened a store in San Luis Obispo Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.63-66, Vol. 2. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. This reminiscence covers the period of Pollard's life from 1848 to1849. It describes his sea voyage to California and his first impressions of upon arrival. This biography also includes some family history.
