The Society of California Pioneers J.L. Martel was born in New Orleans, La. And lived there until 1843 when he sailed on a voyage around the world on a merchant ship. In April 1846, upon arriving in New York, he enlisted in the Navy on board the U.S. Sloop of War, "Dale" for the war with Mexico. Martel served as purser's clerk until 1849. He left the service in San Francisco in 1849. Martel was involved in the Real Estate business. He was appointed Inspector of Customs for three years in San Francisco Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.42-44, Vol. 2. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The transcription includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. This biography was copied from the "Mountain View Register", January 20, 1899. It offers some information pertaining to Martel's acts of service in the Mexican War.
