Description
The traditionally dressed cavaleiro (horseman) on a highly trained horse "plants" a bandarilla (paper frilled 26-inch dart) on a charging bull. The stabbing action in this photograph is both a traditional part of the tourada (bullfight) and is bloodless. The original purpose of this phase was to weaken the bull's head (and horn) tossing ability by piercing its neck muscle (murillo) three or four times. A large pad over its murillo to protect the bull is a part of the California Portuguese American style of the bloodless tourada.
