The Society of California Pioneers George Huntington Peck was born in Burlington, Vermont, March 4, 1819. In 1841, Mr. Peck was admitted to the Bar and began practicing in Burlington. He gave up his practice in 1842 to embark on a life at sea until 1846. On December 1st, 1849 Peck landed in San Francisco. In the same month, with partners, he began farming near Alviso. By May of 1850 Peck was established in San Francisco as a produce merchant. In 1851 and 1852 Peck successfully mined on the middle fork of the American River then he farmed for about two years in Yolo County. In 1854, Peck moved to Sacramento and opened the first public school in the state outside of San Francisco. In 1857-58 he practiced law in Dutch Flat, a mining settlement in Nevada County. In May of 1869 Peck opened the San Francisco Industrial School, and from 1861 to 1863 he was Grammar Master and a Principal in the San Francisco Schools. In 1869 Peck moved to a farm of about 500 acres at El Monte- Los Angeles County. From January 1874-76 Peck served as Public School Superintendent for Los Angeles County Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.80-83, Vol. 2. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. This reminiscence provides Peck's impressions of California in its early days, mentioning details like the cost of produce. It also provides an outline of his life in California and his various business and professional pursuits in the field of education.
