Description
In this photograph a "pega de touros" (tackling of a bull) has been initiated by a team of forcados. After the cabo (leader) enticed the bull to charge, he absorbed the impact in his abdomen as he went over the bull's head, wrapping his arms around its neck. The other forcados are to quickly and carefully move in to help bring the bull to a standstill. Success frequently depends on the strength of the bull and the swiftness of its charge, as not only the lead man, but the second, third, or fourth in line can be tossed aside as the bull completes its run. Among the unique traditions of Portuguese Americans in the Turlock area is dressing in traditional costume as they engage in the bloodless bullfights.
