Description
A farmer drives his horse drawn wagonload of watermelons across the railroad track near the Grange Company building in Turlock, California. Other farmers have their wagons lined up along the tracks and beside a freight car. To the left a portion of the wooden tower that held the fire alarm bell is visible. During the early years of melon production and shipping the farmers would deal directly with buyers who came to Turlock from the East. These buyers would then be responsible for shipping the melons out of Turlock on the Southern Pacific Railroad.
