Description
This photograph was taken at the Tamalpais Centre in Kentfield, California. One of the most popular events at the Tamalpais Centre was the annual May Day celebration and may pole competition. Beginning in 1909 the May Day celebrations and may pole competition took place in which all the southern Marin schools participated. There were races, basketball games and of course a Queen of the May. May Day, 1909, marked the opening of the Tamalpais Centre, a gift of Mrs. A.E. Kent, to Marin County, located on 29 acres of land at the foot of Mt. Tamalpais. The intent of the Tamalpais Centre was to provide educational and recreational opportunities for Marin County residents. The Tamalpais Centre Clubhouse was razed in the 1950s and the site is currently the College of Marin Diamond Physical Education Center.
