Description
The horseman (cavaleiro) is dressed in a traditional 18th century Portuguese costume as part of the stylized bloodless bullfight. The tradition of fighting bulls with horses endured in Portugual as it declined in Spain. The California Portuguese American style of tourada (bullfight) usually has six bulls: two are fought by cavaleiros on horseback and four on foot by toureiros (matadors). This cavaleiro holds a banderilla (dart), the paper-frilled 26-inch long stick with a tip which he will "plant" on the bull.
